The Lord blessed these efforts early on in bringing the future Administrator of RMBI to our church before we even knew if it was going to happen! Praise God! Bro. Glenn Ridings (pictured left) joined the church in 2005. Subsequently, planning for the school also began that same year. The Redlands church then voted to step out in faith and create the school with the idea that seminary classes begin in September of 2006.
Bro. Glenn Ridings was selected by the church to become our Assistant Pastor and the Administrator of the school. Our pastor was selected by the church to be the President of RMBI. A budget was finalized and work began to remodel, repaint and reorganize the church parsonage into the RMBI school building. After a lot of hard work by members of the church, the Redlands Missionary Baptist Institute (RMBI) was ready to house the school! RMBI began holding classes in September 2006. Praise the Lord!
Redlands FMBC Builders
The First Missionary Baptist Church of Redlands sponsors the FMBC Redlands Builders. FMBC Builders is a ministry of John and Esther Thiem.
In 2006 John and Esther Thiem became Full Time Team Members, working with Chapel Builders of California. When General Electric Aviation Services, John’s Employer, talked of closing the plant at Ontario Airport, John and Esther started praying about working with Chapel Builders. They prayed for 2 years and told God that if it was His will and He opened the doors than they would go to work full time building the Lord’s churches.
John was saved in 1971 and became a member of FMBC Redlands in 1972. Esther was saved in 1962 and became a member of Redlands in 1970 when her Father, A.D. Compton Jr. became pastor at FMBC Redlands. They were married in this church in 1973 and have been workers in the church their entire married life. Esther has served as Ladies Auxiliary President, John works with the Building and Grounds Committee and they have both worked as Youth Sponsors, Teachers, Camp Counselors, in the Discovery Bible Club and Teen Discovery programs. John and Esther love to sing and have served the Lord singing in choir and then singing in Gospel Groups formed from members of Redlands FMBC; The Lighthouse Singers, The Gospel Way Quartet and then Mercy Road. John and Esther are now considered “The Singing Builders” as they are asked to sing at every project they go to. However, singing has taken a back seat, because they feel God has called them to a very important ministry and that is building His churches.
What is Chapel Builders?
Chapel Builders is a ministry designed to assist our ABA churches, Pastors and Missionaries in construction of the church buildings and remodeling dwellings used to promote the work of the Lord. Through the work of our Mission Builder and volunteers from Sister Churches we can assist in designing, planning and construction, thus saving thousands of dollars in labor costs. Chapel Builders began in 1988. They helped Redlands plan and build their existing Fellowship hall almost 20 years ago. You can follow John and Esther’s building projects and schedule on www.thethiems.blogspot.com
Take heed now; for the Lord has chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong and do it. I Chronicles 28:10
Disaster Response Ministry
A disaster can strike at anytime, anywhere. It takes many forms -- a hurricane, an earthquake, a tornado, a flood, a fire or a hazardous spill, an act of nature or an act of terrorism. It builds over days or weeks, or hits suddenly, without warning. Every year, millions of Americans face disaster, and its terrifying consequences. In addition, each year, families within our own communities are faced with tragic events that can, and often do, have a major impact on their lives.
First response to a disaster is usually the job of local government's emergency services with help from nearby municipalities (police/fire), or state and volunteer agencies. In a major disaster, and if the governor requests it, federal resources can be mobilized through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for search and rescue, electrical power, food, water, shelter and other basic human needs.
So where do we fit in? Local churches are in a unique position to respond to individual needs in ways that no other organization or group can. Churches can demonstrate the love of Christ as they meet the needs of victims in the time of disaster. One of the greatest testimonies for the cause of Christ are Christians living and helping in their local communities; sharing their faith day-in and day-out under the power of the Holy Spirit.
A disaster is defined as anything that causes human suffering or creates human needs that the victims cannot alleviate themselves. The greatest disasters in our world are not always the huge catastrophes that grab the headlines. There are more disasters that involve one person or one family than the headline grabbers. We cannot minister during the large disasters and ignore the needs of those suffering through individual crises.
Churches must plan how they will respond to disasters, large and small, in their communities. These plans need to be well thought-out and discussed by the church leaders. The unprepared church will miss valuable opportunities to minister while attempting to react to a disaster in their community.
Ministry is the act of serving. Serving those whose lives have been disrupted is the very act that Jesus commended in the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). Jesus ministered to people He met each day. The miracles He performed were answers to the needs of those with whom He came in contact.
In the complex world we live in today, with such great needs all around us, it’s easy to throw up our hands and give up because we do not know where to start. We must realize that individuals are won to the saving grace of Jesus Christ one person at a time. Churches must plan for and train their members to work with individuals caught in a crisis. They also must plan and prepare for the disasters that can affect their communities.
With this in mind we need to take a proactive approach to becoming more involved in our community. We need to get outside of the walls of our church building and show the community who we are, and who we stand for. Jesus Christ!
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
For more information about the Disaster Response Unit or CERT training, please contact Tony Farrar at 909-322-0833.
Youth Group
The FMBC Redlands Youth Group is made up of members from 5th grade through 12th grade. These youth are active members of FMBC Redlands, participating in the worship services and serving in and through the ministries of the church. The Youth Group holds Bible studies, has monthly business meetings where they learn proper parliamentary business procedures, and participates in planned activities and fundraisers throughout the year.
Regularly, the youth meet together with other youth from various sister churches in the area for Youth Rallies. The Youth Group also enjoys annual camping events such as the winter retreat and summer camp where they always have a great time - and a lot of food, fellowship and fun! All of the Youth Group activities are important, however its most important function, as with every ministry of the church, is to carry out the great commission given by Christ Himself in Matthew 28:18-20 which is to "go" and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with a lost and dying world through personal witnessing and testimony.
We pray that we will continue to follow God as He guides us within our work, that lost souls we come in contact with will recognize their desperate need to accept the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
It is our prayer that we will continue to grow in Godly wisdom and spiritual discernment, both as a church and as individuals, always lifting up one another in love.
Purpose Statement
To unite the youth as an organized group under the First Missionary Baptist Church of Redlands; to establish goals and actively work together to achieve those goals for the glory and honor of God; to reinforce unity within the Group through shared devotions, fellowship, and striving together to reach common goals with a oneness of mind and heart; and to prepare and strengthen the youth to be active leaders in the church, faithful and always seeking the will of the Lord.
Youth Group Verse
"Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Philippians 2:2-5
Recurring Events
Youth Group meetings are held every month.

Although activities may vary within these groups, the overall purpose is the same throughout all of them. As a ministry of FMBC Redlands, our goals are to:

further the spiritual growth of the ladies in the church. (II Peter 3:18, Ephesians 4:14-15, Titus 2:3-5)
develop close fellowship between the ladies of the church, furthering the unity within the church body overall. (I Thessalonians 5:12, Romans 12:4-5)
receive encouragement, strengthening, counsel and comfort that comes from being with God’s people. (Romans 12:15, Hebrews 10:24-25)
Ladies Auxiliary Meeting
The Ladies Auxiliary comes together each week to study God’s Word and have prayer. (The Ladies Auxiliary meets every Wednesday at 10:00 am at the church.)
On the 2nd Wednesday of each month following the Bible study, the ladies enjoy a luncheon together in honor of the birthdays that fall within the month.
The first Wednesday of each month is the monthly business meeting at which the ladies discuss and make decisions about the activities that will be carried out by the Ladies Auxiliary. The following are just a few of the activities/projects the ladies are involved in:
Support/encouragement through cards, gifts and prayers for a particular Pastor’s wife or Missionary’s wife that is in need of these.

First Missionary Baptist Church (FMBC) of Redlands began with a vision to see lost souls saved in the area of Redlands. FMBC was organized on August 31, 1941.
Today, this church still stands for the fundamental teachings of the Bible. It is our prayer that we continue to "earnestly contend for the faith" and carry out the Great Commission as given by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:18-20.
Charter member, Sis. Lois Green, was not present for the original photograph.
She was a member of the church from September 7, 1941 until December 9, 2003, when she went home to be with the Lord.
The charter members of the FMBC of Redlands(From left to right): Minnie Jones, Etta Thurmond, Pastor Elvis Thurmond, Deacon Thomas Clark, and Louis T., Katie and Henry Huffstutler.
1. We believe that love one for another as Jesus loves the believer manifests our discipleship, proves our love for God and symbolizes our authority as New Testament churches. Love is therefore the great commandment of the LORD Jesus Christ upon which all others are dependent (Matthew 22:35-40; John 13:34, 35; John 15:12; 1 John 4:7-21; 1 John 5:1-3; Revelation 2:4, 5).
2. We believe in the verbal inspiration and infallibility of the whole Bible as originally written, and that the Bible is the all-sufficient rule of faith and practice (Psalm 119:160; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; 2 Peter 1:21).
3. We believe in the personal triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, equal in divine perfection. (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:32-35; John 14:16; Hebrews 1:7,8).
4. We believe in the Genesis account of Creation (Genesis 1; 2).
5. We believe that Satan is a fallen angel, the archenemy of God and man, the unholy god of this world, and that his destiny is the eternal lake of fire (Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:11-19; Matthew 25:41; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Ephesians 6:10-17; Revelation 20:10).
6. We believe in the virgin birth and sinless humanity of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:18-20; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:22).
7. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ (John 10:30; John 1:1, 14; 2 Corinthians 5:19).
8. We believe the Holy Spirit is the divine Administrator for Jesus Christ in His churches (Luke 24:49; John 14:16, 17; Acts 1:4, 5, 8; Acts 2:1-4).
9. We believe that miraculous spiritual manifestation gifts were done away when the Bible was completed. Faith, Hope and Love are the vital abiding Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12; 13; 14; Micah 7:15).
10. We believe that Man was created in the image of God and lived in innocency until he fell by voluntary transgression from his sinless state, the result being that all mankind are sinners (Genesis 1:26; Genesis 3:6-24; Romans 5:12, 19).
11. We believe that the suffering and death of Jesus Christ was substitutionary for all mankind and is efficacious only to those who believe (Isaiah 53:6; Hebrews 2:9; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 Peter 3:18; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 John 2:2).
12. We believe in the bodily resurrection and ascension of Christ and the bodily resurrection of His saints (Matthew 28:1-7; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Corinthians 15:42-58; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).
13. We believe in the premillennial, personal, bodily return of Christ as the crowning event of the Gentile age. This event will include the resurrection of the righteous to the Millennium and to the eternal heaven, which will be followed by the resurrection of the unrighteous unto eternal punishment in the
lake of fire and that the righteous shall enter into the heaven age (Matthew 25:46; John 14:1-6; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 2 Thessalonians 2:8; Revelation 19; Revelation 20:4-6 and 11-15; Revelation 21:8).
14. We believe that the depraved sinner is saved wholly by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and the requisites to regeneration are repentance toward God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 13:3-5; John 3:16-18; Acts 20:21; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8, 9).
15. We believe that the moment a person repents of his sin and places his faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, he is born again, becomes a child of God, is personally indwelt by the Holy Spirit, receives forgiveness of all his sins and receives eternal life. He is also assured that from the moment of his physical death he will forever be in the presence of Christ, that he will be in the first resurrection and that he will not suffer any punishment in Hell or the Lake of Fire, regardless of the degree of his faithfulness to God. This is because he is saved and kept wholly by God's Grace, apart from works (John 3:6; John 3:36; John 5:24; John 10:27-30; John 16:8, 9; Romans 8:9-11; Romans 8:35-39; 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20; Hebrews 10:39; 1 Peter 1:5; Ephesians 2:8-9; Ephesians 4:30; Titus 3:5).
16. We believe that God deals with believers as His children, that He chastises the disobedient, and that He rewards the obedient (Matthew 16:27; Matthew 25:14-23; John 1:12; Hebrews 12:5-11; 2 John 8; Revelation 22:12).
17. We believe that Jesus Christ established His church, the Body of Christ, during His ministry on earth and that it is always a local, visible assembly of scripturally baptized believers in covenant relationship to carry out the Commission of the Lord Jesus Christ, and each church is an independent, self-governing body, and no other ecclesiastical body may exercise authority over it. We believe that Jesus Christ gave the Great Commission to the New Testament churches only, and that there has been a succession of true churches adhering to the doctrines and practices of the New Testament from the time of Christ to this day, and that the churches of this Association are so identified (Matthew 4:18-22; Matthew 16:18; Matthew 28:19, 20; Mark 1:14-20; John 1:35-51; Ephesians 3:21).
18. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ will choose His Bride from the faithful members of His New Testament Churches (2 Corinthians 11:1-3; Revelation 19:7, 8).
19. We believe that there are two pictorial ordinances in the Lord's churches: Baptism and the Lord's Supper. Scriptural baptism is the immersion of penitent believers in water, administered by the authority of a New Testament church in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Lord's Supper is a memorial ordinance, restricted to the members of that local church observing the ordinance (Matthew 28:19, 20; Acts 8:12, 38; Romans 6:4; 1 Corinthians 5:11-13; 1 Corinthians 11:1, 2, 17-20, 26).
20. We believe that there are two divinely appointed offices in a church, pastors and deacons, to be filled by men whose qualifications are set forth in Titus and 1 Timothy (Titus 1:6-9; 1 Timothy 3:1-13).
21. We believe that all associations, fellowships, and committees are, and properly should be, servants of, and under control of the churches (Matthew 20:25-28).
22. We believe in freedom of worship without interference from the government and affirm our belief in civil obedience, unless the laws and regulations of civil government run contrary to the Holy Scriptures (Romans 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-15).
23. We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman . We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery and pornography are sinful perversions of God's gift of sex. We believe that God disapproves and forbids any attempt to alter one's gender by surgery or appearance (Genesis 2:24, Genesis 19:5, 13, Genesis 26:8-9; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-29; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4).
24. We believe that the only legitimate marriage is the joining of one man and one woman (Genesis 2:24; Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:10; Ephesians 5:22-23).
